(Tower Tomography - Density Profiling)
|
|||
| The CAT Scan (Computed Axial Tomography Scan) is a non-invasive technique used to determine the cross-sectional density profile inside a process vessel. This technique may be used where the distribution of process fluids is imperative to performance as in a distillation column packed bed or fluidized catalytic converter riser or standpipe.
The CAT Scan technique is used to:

Performing the CAT Scan

The CAT Scan uses a small gamma ray source and a series of electronic detectors placed in a horizontal plane around the exterior of the vessel. Density measurements are taken at a constant elevation by rotating the source and detectors around the outer circumference. The density at each intercept point is calculated to produce the profile across the entire plane.
The CAT Scan service does not require any preparation to the vessel. The gamma rays are able to penetrate cladding, insulation and the vessel shell. The process can be run at any operating rate or condition that requires investigation. |

| Investigation of the packed bed can be done at various elevations to provide a complete picture of the distribution throughout the bed.
A CAT Scan performed at the top of the bed will determine if the distributor is functioning correctly while a scan at the bottom will verify if the process fluid leaving the bed has been distributed evenly. Additional scans across the bed at different elevations will provide a more detailed profile of the fluid distribution through the bed. Regular CAT Scans on a packed bed to monitor performance can be a valuable tool in assessing process and bed performance over time. This allows the column to be shut down and entered only when necessary reducing material and labour costs. |
